Early experiences have a great impact on later behavior. According to most animal behaviorists, the sensitive period for socialization is between 9 and 13 weeks of age. By 18 weeks, they feel, the window for socialization closes. After this time, it can be very difficult to acclimate your dog to unfavorable experiences, and poorly-socialized dogs are at a high risk for developing behavioral issues such as fear aggression. Most owners do not bring their puppies to their new homes until they are 6 to 8 weeks old, and many not until after 13 weeks of age. This makes the first months with your puppy very important.
At Fall Creek Veterinary Medical Center, we host social gatherings for puppies six months and younger. These informal meetings give young dogs the opportunity to interact with unfamiliar dogs and people, and helps foster positive associations within the environment of the veterinary hospital. It is also a lot of fun for everyone! This offers a great forum for discussing behavioral issues and training techniques with staff and other new puppy parents.
Our next Puppy Party will be held: Saturday, July 30th, from 1:00- 2:30 PM in our front lobby.
Space is limited so please R.S.V.P. as soon as possible to stacey@fallcreekvet.com, or by phoning our office.
For older dogs, we hold occasional “bark park” parties at Pierson’s Bark Park in Fishers, IN. These gatherings give your dog an opportunity to socialize and play with other dogs and people. We also have fun games that you and your dog can participate in for a chance to win a prize! Dogs must be up to date on vaccinations and fecal parasite examinations. Registration is $5.00 if pre-registering via the clinic.
